Introduction
Shun-Tien Liu was born in Pingtung County in 1951 and moved to Hualien in 1975. By then, the marble carving was very popular. Relief sculptures and line carved marbles are the main ones people made to sell to Japan. Liu joined the industry to make a living. About 5 years, he trained his basic carving skill and focused on marble sculpture. He was invited to Japan twice for Buddhism statues carving, the first time in 1988 to Nagoya, the second time at around 1990s to Hokkaido, where he came to know more about stone Buddhism statues.
For Liu, he thinks the Shun-Tien Liu was born in Pingtung County in 1951 and moved to Hualien in 1975. By then, the marble-carving industry was booming. Relief sculptures and line-carved marbles were mainly exported to Japan. Liu joined the industry in order to make a living. Approximately for five years, he obtained a fundamental knowledge about basic carving skills and focused on marble sculpture. He was invited twice to Japan for carving Buddhism statues: the first time in 1988 to Nagoya, the second time around 1990s to Hokkaido, where he came to know more about stone Buddhism statues.
For Liu, he recognizes the words from Zen, “Without written words, the things can more directly aim for human’s mind,” which demonstrates a simple and practical wisdom when it comes to search for one’s Self. His works combine stainless steel cables with stones, constructing an internal oppressive tension. This is how he presents the force of “awakening” for the lives without boundaries of external world or old experiences. In more recent works, he uses letters “T” and “C” to create simple stone sculptures, manifesting a harmonious fusion of transcendental truth and humanity. By applying these two kinds of materials which are with same quality of eternal stability to his creations, he demonstrates a force of “self-awakening” while life goes on.
