Hualien Stone Sculpture Museum

The top of this canoe-shaped slab of black granite is decorated with wave-like lines. The artist attempts to merge wood with his works. Interestingly, the conflict between different materials has not generated a sense of incongruous exclusion. Instead, it seems to provide the effect of adding a finishing touch. Simple, neat objects and lines offer a Zen-like expression of life’s caprice and fragments. Thoughts are like a drifting canoe, moving or staying still according to the waves. Perhaps, we should sometimes take a mental holiday, where we can let go of all worries and return to a spiritual serenity.
