Expanding
The artist carved a piece of black granite into the shape of an irregularly shaped leaf that is expanding out ward. The leaf that also looks like spreading wings is an abstract expression of “expanding.” The crosscut of the stone is not polish and is retained in its original rough guise. On the other hand, the front is polished and shiny. This creates a contrast between the two texts of the same stone, adding a new dimension to the work. Furthermore, the work incorporates Tsung-Hui Lin’s notion of “harmony between nature and mankind.” Through clever use of natural elements and materials, the artist is able to express the synergies between art and nature.
