Kneeling down for Nursing
There is a Chinese saying, “Sheep know filial piety by kneeling down for nursing” which means lambs would kneel down on its former legs to suck ewe’s milk which highlights an act of gratitude, while sheep is considered as a mascot representing mercy and goodness. The symbol of a special era in Taiwan has been carved out in this stonework realistically which indicates during the era of the martial law, the traditional Chinese family instructions and Confucian ethics were emphasized, therefore, the work tries to fabulize the overtone that human being can promote filial piety and also distribute the greatness of glorious mother love. The work lively expresses how an ewe nurses its lamb, while the lamb kneeling down its legs beside its mom’s feet illustrates the symbol of lamb knowing filial piety and acts so out of gratitude.
