Mountainous Seaside
This work is a freehand and conceptual expression of the Hualien landscape. The jagged edges represent the towering mountains, while the polished surfaces represents the sparkling ocean surface. With such a succinct approach, imagery of mountains and the ocean are merged into one. The hollowed out spaces that runs through the work is a representation of the many tunnels of the Suhua Highway. The work is reminiscent of Tao Yuan-Ming’s fable, Peach Blossom Spring, in which a fisherman found a paradise at the end of a tunnel. Perhaps, the artists is trying to hint that we are all like that fisherman and that Hualien is the paradise mentioned in Peach Blossom Spring.
