Balance
Tobel’s Balance is in a state of unease and wriggling, yet it appears to be completely tranquil and static. The entire rectangular marble plague tablet looks almost inconspicuous, yet its subtle curves give imbue the piece with a sense of elegant motion. It appears to tilt, yet it appears static; it is stationary, yet appears to be on the brink of going into motion. The top of the stone plague tablet swivels down ward, while this is counter balanced with a volute that spins up wards. This complex whirlpool obscures the work’s share, yet making it that more memorable. The work embodies motion and stillness, and is memorable as well as vague. The many angles and swirls seem to create an ambiguous yet delicate balance.
