Introduction
Tobel's starting point in his sculptural work is an old medium - stone - through which, as a contemporary artist, he stands in opposition to the zeitgeist. Unlike the traditional or industrial working of stone, Tobel turns the work process on its head: only the interior of the monolithic stone block will be treated. The heart of the work, resulting from the removal of material, is a reduced graphic of empty space. The outer surfaces, which have been broken into, retain the exterior nature of the stone: raw, strange, eternal.
