In the stone sculpture field, Yung-To Cheng began as “a stonemason”, then became “a master” and finally attained the level of “an artist.” He really deserves praise for his effort because he has not only pursued a higher education but different layers and messages for every sculpture he did. From his art works, one can easily feel the variety and the richness in aboriginal culture. He said that he began with figurative style mostly, but now his creation is based on aboriginal culture. His creation subjects include the characters from Ami stories, Ami culture and tradition, Ami mythology, Ami dance. He works on stone with both the figurative, delicate style and the abstract, simple style focusing on lines to present the concepts, which is a different way to preserve the core of Ami culture.Cheng said that he had experienced low spirits in creation and had had doubts about himself that he wanted to abandon creation and even leave Taiwan for different stimulus and new inspirations. However, he never did. It was his strong inner passion for stone sculpture that brought him back to creation. After that test he has been through, he finally determined to devote himself to “Stone Sculpture” for life.He loves stones and is actually an art creator full of spontaneous marvelous ideas. He entered this field “by mistake” all because of his obsession for life; hence he began his life journey. Creating a new sculpture is like going on a new journey to him. However tough and lonely he feels, he takes it all because he can thus realize the wonders of the universe as well as the values of life.During the past 20 years, he has experienced the times when stone sculpture industry has gone through several ups and downs. He really thinks “Hualien is the hometown for stones” because it is richly endowed by nature. Hualien is supposed to prosper in stone sculpture industry and he wishes to make Hualien a main city for stone sculpture worldwide.
